The N-SSA-WR promotes the competitive shooting of Civil War firearms and artillery and encourages the preservation of battlefields, artifacts and education of the period.

About Us

The Western Region was created in 1996. Presently it is the most westerly region of the N-SSA and covers the States of Wisconsin and Illinois, and “those lands west”. Being one of the smaller regions does not mean it is small at heart. The members of the Western Region are strong in history as well as in competition. Like the main organization, they have gathered to commemorate the heroism of the men and women, of both sides, who fought in the American Civil War, 1861-1865. We do this by participating in various activities that educates and encourages the preservation of Civil War artifacts.

The region encourages individuals and units to share their artifacts and knowledge to educate those of the events that helped shape a young country 150 years ago. The primary method to get people involved in this history is by participating in Live Fire competition using the types and styles of weapons that both side depended on. By showcasing the fire power of these “modern firearms” we give the historian a better understanding that one can not get by watching a recreation of a battle or reenactors living as the soldiers did during that period. This includes not only the small arms such as muskets, carbines, and revolvers but also artillery when possible.

And one does not have to travel far to take part in the fun. Most of the skirmishes take place a two to three hour drive from down-town Chicago. The farthest skirmish in 2011 is just south of Springfield, where one can stop at many Lincoln historical sites before or after the event. Others are held near Streator, Illinois and Bristol, Wisconsin. Check the 2011 schedule for dates and locations. Most skirmishes are two day events that include individuals matches followed by carbine team events on Saturday, and musket team competition Sunday morning. The last shot is normally fired by 1 PM allowing all to break camp, say their good byes, and head home.

All members of the Western Region are also members of the N-SSA and have the rights and privileges offered by the N-SSA. This includes the use of Ft. Shenandoah, the home range of the N-SSA. It is located on several hundred acres of land in the rolling hills near Winchester, Virginia. It is located a short drive from Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Bull Run and other famous National Battlefield Parks. Twice a year, late May and early October, National Competitions are held at the fort and draw around 1500 competitors from all over the East Coast, Deep South and Midwest.

So if you like American Civil War history, and would like to learn more, this might be the organization for you. Check out the N-SSA and Western Regional websites for more information and contact us.

I thank you for your time.
